In 1989
the Accounting Education Change Commission (AECC) was
formed to improve the academic preparation of
accountants, so that entrants to the profession (broadly
defined) would possess the skills, knowledge, and values
and attitudes required for success in accounting careers.
The AECC mission was consistent with the objectives of
the American Accounting Association's Bedford Committee
report and the Sponsoring Firms' white paper,
"Perspectives on Education: Capabilities for Success
in the Accounting Profession."
Undoubtedly
the most visible AECC activity over its seven-year life
was the funding of curriculum grants at 13 educational
institutions. The purpose of this monograph is to provide
a convenient, brief summary of the grant experience at
each of these institutions. In general, a similar format
is followed in each of the reports to ease your review
and comparison of the grant experience at the various
schools. They are presented alphabetically by name of the
school.
The success of
the AECC cannot be measured solely by the results at the
grant schools. Only if non-grant schools can learn form
these experiences and use the results to enhance the
quality of accounting education in their particular
institutions will the efforts of the AECC have resulted
in widespread improvement in accounting education. Thus,
it is our hope that you will read these reports, discuss
them, seek additional input from the grant schools as
appropriate, and share in the excitement of working to
improve accounting education.
