Teaching Accounting Online:
Learning from the Experience of Others
This session has been
CANCELLED.
Description/Objectives:
The College of Business at James Madison University is nearing the completion
of its first M.B.A. with a Concentration in Information Security (MBA-INFOSEC)
degree offered online.
This workshop will
demonstrate the process used for effectively teaching online. The session will
demonstrate the use of the three instructional tools used to facilitate the
courses. The use of the three tools provides a multi-dimensional, highly
interactive learning experience for the students.
The workshop simulates an
actual online course. One presenter plays the role of the instructor; a second
presenter plays the role of a student. We meet via the Internet with the
instructor at the workshop and the student on the James Madison University
campus.
Distance learning and
teaching and mentoring students via the Internet entails many specific nuances.
However, if done correctly, the distance learning experience can be very
positive for the instructor and the students. In addition to demonstrating the
process for teaching the course, presenters share lessons learned from the
online experience, for example: what works and what does not work, student
expectations, student concerns, and effective time management.
Format/Structure:
Presenters simulate an actual online course. One presenter plays the role of
the instructor; a second presenter plays the role of a student. Instructor and
student meet via the Internet with the instructor at the workshop and the
student at a remote location.
Intended Audience:
Deans, directors, and faculty interested in the development and/or
implementation of a distance learning program or course.
Presenters:
M. Cathy Sullivan and Sarah Cheverton, James Madison University
