Implementing a Successful Student Recruitment Program

This session has been CANCELLED.

Description/Objectives:
The objective of this session is to give participants the knowledge and tools necessary to design, implement, and finance a successful student recruiting program at their school. The program is broken into three sections.

Jodi Ryan and Joe Bittner from the AICPA will describe the CPA Information Package called the iPACK that is designed for classroom use by business, accounting and mathematics instructors in high schools and in introductory accounting courses at the college level. Each iPACK contains the award winning Takin' Care of Business video, an Education Handbook, and other materials that help convey a more realistic impression of the accounting profession. Joe will also describe the very successful High School Educators Symposium and the strong links it can build between influential high school educators and university accounting programs.

The University of Connecticut's accounting department has successfully countered declining enrollments. Dr. Dick Kochanek will discuss the accounting socials, departmental communication with prospective accounting students, and the restructured introductory accounting course that are used to recruit students. He will also describe in detail their Introduction to the Profession Seminar and the positive impact it has had on accounting enrollments.

Kansas State University's recruiting program has been in place since 1990 and was part of its curriculum revision sponsored by its Accounting Education Change Commission grant. This comprehensive program features it own recruiting video and programs that target high school teachers, counselors and administrators, high school students, and college students. Since 1990 both the number and quality of accounting students has increased. Dr. Dan Deines will describe in detail each of the three programs and how the entire program is administered and financed.

This will be a hands-on and interactive session. Participants will work with recruiting materials, learn how to implement specific recruiting programs, and discuss what programs are most appropriate for their school.
