Teaching Accounting Systems:
Tips and Techniques for the New Instructor
Description/Objectives:
The current shortage of accounting faculty trained to teach Accounting Systems
has resulted in faculty, whose experience and academic training have focused in
other areas, being asked to teach in the Accounting Information Systems area.
While the Information Systems Section of the AAA strongly supports the
expansion of programs to train Accounting Information Systems researchers and
educators, this workshop is designed to assist the faculty member who is not
necessarily trained in AIS who is about to teach accounting systems for the
first time. It will also be of benefit to the new AIS graduate who is going to
begin teaching Accounting Systems. Teaching Accounting Systems is often
challenging as a new faculty member struggles to identify core course
objectives, and to develop lectures, problems, and in-class and out-of-class
projects. Topics covered in this workshop will include:
- Objectives of an AIS
course
- Approaches to teaching
AIS
- Review of some of the
more technical areas
- Lecture
approaches
- Tried-and-true class
projects
- Information on available
resources
Format/Structure:
Participants will engage in hands-on Accounting Systems exercises to understand
their value and usefulness in the classroom. The workshop will also present
specific information along with group discussions.
Intended Audience:
Faculty who will be teaching Accounting Systems for either the first time or
who would like additional resources and background.
Presenters:
Martha Eining, University of Utah
Nancy Bagranoff, Miami University
Kathy Hurtt, University of Wisconsin
