1. Steps for Better
Thinking
Presenter: Susan K. Wolcott, WolcottLynch
Description: This session
will introduce various teaching, learning, and assessment application of Steps
for Better Thinking. Steps for Better Thinking is a developmental
problem-solving or inquiry process, grounded in two theories from developmental
psychology: Fischer's dynamic skill theory (Fischer 1980; Fischer and Bidell
1998) and King and Kitchener's (1994) reflective judgment model of cognitive
development. Steps for Better Thinking provides an innovative and practical way
for accounting professors to efficiently foster and assess student competencies
such as critical thinking, ethical reasoning, communication, teamwork, risk
analysis, and lifelong learning. The poster materials for this session will
include:
- A graphical presentation of Steps
for Better Thinking, which illustrates how student skills develop in
"steps"
- Examples of coursework assignments
for fostering competency development · Rubrics for assessing student
progress
- References to additional resources
that make use of Steps for Better Thinking such as:

- AAA Toolkit: Developing Critical
Thinking: The Key to Professional Competencies
