Implementing Interactive Learning Experiences in
Accounting Curricula
Presenters: Maria Sanchez, Rider University
Kevin F. Brown, Drexel University
Christopher
P. Agoglia, Drexel University
Description: The purpose of
this session is to describe the implementation of interactive learning in
accounting curricula with the assistance of practitioners. The session will
present the pedagogical and institutional benefits that result from involving
practitioners in the learning process. For students, this interaction with
practitioners incorporates the "real world" of the profession into
the classroom setting, providing opportunities for better appreciation for the
challenges and complexities of public accounting. Exposure to practitioners
offers students a chance to network with members of their profession and
demonstrate their abilities to potential employers. From an institutional
perspective, this interactive learning process fosters the strengthening of
relationships with public accounting firms, promoting innovative curricula and
accounting student quality to these firms. Participants in this session will be
provided with information on using an interactive learning dimension in their
own courses, and be able to query the presenters about their experiences. The
presenters will also discuss evidence from their pilot study of practitioner
interaction that demonstrates the benefits of its implementation. Additionally,
the presenters will discuss ideas about using this learning approach in other
courses in an accounting curriculum.
