17. Discovering
Accounting Research
Presenter: Gary Entwistle, University of Saskatchewan
Description: In this session,
participants will be introduced to an innovative new course, "Discovering
Accounting Research." This course enables students to both discover and
appreciate the rich vibrancy of academic accounting research, and would be
especially relevant for senior or "fifth-year" level students. In
essence, the course requires students to discover, critique, and informally and
formally defend their understanding of both published and in-process academic
articles in a self-selected topical area. This course was first offered in 2002
and drew rave reviews from students, as well as from the academic and
professional participants who joined with them in a mini "academic
accounting conference." The primary learning outcomes are:
- To make students more informed and
critical consumers of written materials, both academic and professional;
- To develop in students an
appreciation for the academic research process, including various issues or
research design;
- To provide students an opportunity
to refine their written, verbal, and presentation skills;
- To expose students to the rich
variety of academic accounting research, including research currently in
progress; and
- To offer students a glimpse into the
world of the accounting academic, and to foster in those students with research
curiosity an early consideration of an academic accounting career.
