19. Implementing Role
Playing in Accounting Courses
Presenter: Diane Janvrin, Iowa State University
Description: Role playing is
an innovative teaching strategy designed to approximate a real-life experience
under controlled conditions. Most cases passively present information to
students (i.e., students obtain information via reading the case). In contrast,
with role play, information is disseminated to students as they participate in
the case. Surprisingly, few accounting professors use role playing in their
courses. This session provides participants with the tools and resources needed
to successfully implement role playing in their teaching. The poster session
includes:
- Identification of role-playing
benefits
- Implementation tips
- Role-playing cases
- Suitable accounting topics for role
playing
- Role-playing resources
