21. Increasing Accounting Majors with the Business Planning Model-An Innovative Approach to Introductory Management Accounting
Presenters:
Noah P. Barsky, Villanova University
Anthony Catanach, Jr., Villanova University

Description: The Business Planning Model (BPM) is a fundamentally different approach for teaching introductory management accounting. The BPM integrates business strategy and risk topics with traditional content and fosters learning through a semester-long business planning simulation. The session will specifically address many of the objectives in the call for proposals.

Proposal Objective Business Planning Model Features
Successful teaching activities for specific courses
Implementing innovative curricula
We will discuss the model's motivation, development, delivery, and assessment.
Critical thinking and cognitive skills development The course emphasizes analytical, communication, and decision-making skills.
Course/classroom research projects
Emphasizing skills required on the new CPA exam
Simulations, research, and business skills are central to the new exam and drive course content and structure.
Integrating technology into courses
Blending software into courses and curriculum
The BPM uses commercial-planning software to emphasize analysis over formatting and programming skills.
Effective approaches for using cases The course employs several "mini-cases" to deliver content.
Identifying and recruiting students into accounting The approach increased accounting majors at our institution.
Using service-learning approaches Some student teams develop plans actually used by local businesses.
Activity-based teaching Simulation dedicates classroom time to interaction and discussion.
Using workplace-authentic teaching resources from professional organizations The approach uses "real world" tools that have been validated by major accounting firms.
