6. Improving Course
Ratings through Motivating Students
Presenter: Carol Shook, University of Arkansas
Description: The session's
focus will be on techniques to motivate students in the classroom, including
examples from my teaching as one of three 2001 Associated Student Government
outstanding Professors of the Year for the University of Arkansas, and the
latest research in this area. Also included will be tips to obtain
participation from students any time desired. The session will include handling
common de-motivators and how to handle distractions in the classroom. A handout
of top tips and an instructor self-assessment will be provided. Participants
will learn why motivating students is important and 30 specific motivation
techniques, with multiple examples on how to implement these techniques.
Examples include critical-thinking opportunities, making course assignments
meaningful, using novelty teaching methods, etc. Participants will learn the
latest classroom participation tips such as learning partners and games to
learn material with fun. Participants will also discover new ways to deal with
the problem students and how to encourage preparation for class, as well as
signals and techniques the professor can use to limit the over-participator and
interact with students who appear to be withdrawn. An instructor
self-assessment will help participants realize where they currently stand in
motivating students and provide suggestions on improvement areas.
