11. Can We Discuss Ethics Honestly?
Presenter:
Gwendolen B. White, Ball State University

Description: The focus of my project is to obtain interaction with accounting students in a discussion of personal and professional ethics. The interactive participation should give students the opportunity to explore the role of personal ethics in their professional conduct. I conducted an ethics in accounting seminar on April 9, 2003 with members of Ball State University's chapter of Beta Alpha Psi using a Personal Response System (PRS). In this seminar, members of the fraternity answered questions about their personal ethics. By using a pocket-size wireless transmitter, they send an infrared signal to a receiver, which in turn is connected to a central projector via personal computer. Their individual responses will be anonymous, but the PRS will provide an instantaneous statistical summary of the group's responses. This summary will be displayed to the group for discussion. This method should achieve active audience involvement in an ethics discussion. The participants will have anonymity and should feel free to answer honestly. At the end of the seminar, the students were given an evaluation form to assess the methods used in the seminar. For example, "Did this method allow you to answer the ethics questions honestly?"
