17. Creating a
"Modern Corporate Reporting Class"
Presenter: Sudha K. Krishnan, Loyola Marymount University
Description: The focus of
this session details my experience in creating a "Modern Corporate
Reporting" (MCR) class offered as an elective to the part-time M.B.A.
student at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles (LMU).
MCR covers issues in accounting with
a book of essays as a textbook and journal article to supplement the text.
Three major changes were implemented in the class. First, I wanted the class to
be as current and relevant as possible. Second, I wanted to use cases to make
the class more realistic and application-oriented. Third, I wanted to give the
students the choice of class material for the last two class sessions.
The project involved detailed
searches for articles/research papers/cases/other media collected topic by
topic for the class and implementation during class in the Fall 2001. Articles
were accessed through online databases and the library ERes system. Blackboard
was also used to deliver the material to the students.
Participants of this session will be
able to use my experience to avoid making the same mistakes as I did in setting
up a current issues-based class. They can adapt portions of their existing
classes to bring in current issues as I did for the M.B.A. class.
