20. Learning
Accounting with Excel®-Based Jeopardy
Presenter: Elizabeth A. Murphy, DePaul University
Description: In order to
introduce any material in a fun and engaging manner, I developed an Excel-based
Jeopardy game. This tool makes typically dry topics (e.g., double-entry system,
governmental accounting terminology) come alive. The Jeopardy board includes
links to actual Jeopardy game sound files, making the game realistic and
entertaining. For in-class use, volunteers help judge while the professor runs
the game on the computer. Three groups of students are established, and all
students in each group must participate in some way before a student can
participate a second time. Students can also use the game for self-assessment
outside class since a separate worksheet allows students to track their scores
and easily earmark questions missed each time they play the game. Another
alternative for student learning is as a group project. Groups of students can
develop the content themselves for topics typically considered by students to
be challenging. This approach emphasizes communication, teamwork, computer, and
technical accounting skills. To facilitate use with group projects (or by other
faculty), entering new questions and answers simply involves typing content
into separate worksheets dedicated to entering board content.
Faculty attending this session will experience firsthand
how fun, engaging, and effective this tool is.
