22. The Sky Is the
Limit, Inc. (Tips and Techniques for Teaching AIS)
Presenter: Rabih Zeidan, University of Houston
Description: The focus of
this session is to introduce integrated teaching methods in an accounting
information systems (AIS) course. A computerized accounting system application
is used to integrate "real world" activities and decisions to class
lectures. "Open-ended" issues, which motivate questions and
discussions, are embedded in the accounting system exercise. The computerized
accounting system application is designed to accommodate multiple correct
answers based on the type of business and business rules, to keep students
creatively thinking about possible courses of action, threats, opportunities,
and the controls to abide by. Challenges and opportunities to instructors are
embedded in this application: having a flexible application open for multiple
inputs and the opportunities of targeting a wider range of students and
applications.
Hands-on experiences are used to
reinforce understanding of AIS concepts, procedures and controls; these
experiences relate to main sections of an AIS textbook. Objectives are clear
and check figures are available for students to provide positive feedback about
their progress. The Sky Is the Limit, Inc. is an exercise that can be
customized by the professor to meet specific or broad needs.
