28. Introductory
Accounting Class, a Blended Course
Presenter: Kay Guess, The University of Texas at Austin
Description: The introductory
course in accounting is required for all M.B.A.s who do not have an
undergraduate business degree. This course is taught in a blended
format-meaning it is online using Blackboard and other media, and students meet
on campus about five times a semester plus three additional times to take
exams. Real-time office hours are conducted with the use of a software program
called Centra. Lectures are recorded live in the classroom (during an actual
teaching of the class) and then become a part of the class instruction.
Students are assigned ethical problems each week and they submit their opinions
that are shared with each class member, and each is required to respond. A
website is also used where students have a weekly schedule posted, along with
other important information (i.e., the syllabus).
You will learn how we constructed
this class, the amount of time it takes, ways to engage the students in
learning, testing methods, quiz methods, participation by the students,
real-time office hours, and how the students have responded to the class. You
will see the actual website and learn how to do it, who you need to work with,
and the time it takes to get it up and running.
