30. Using Online
Exercises to Prepare Students for the New CPA Exam
Presenter: Judy Ramage, Christian Brothers University
Description: This session
addresses the problems students will face when taking the CPA exam. In the new
format students will be expected to solve simulations and conduct research to
solve problems. Many students are woefully unprepared for such a task because
they are used to thinking in terms of paper and pen when solving problems and
referring to textbooks when conducting research. Many schools are already
requiring electronic submission of assignments and demonstration on the part of
the student that technology has been used to the fullest. (As a simplistic but
true example, students using an electronic spreadsheet on the exam will not be
allowed to enter numbers in a cell that would be better served by a
formula.)
This session will address those
problems and develop the following outcomes:
Awareness on the part of
participants of the new format of the CPA exam; Identification of new
competencies that students must master; Identification of techniques for
teaching those competencies; Knowledge of online techniques that could
"simulate the simulations"; and Awareness of possible problems to be
encountered when teaching these techniques in an online course.
