Learning to Design and Teach an Accounting Capstone

Kathryn J. Jervis
Washington & Lee University

Abstract: This paper describes the rationale, implementation issues, and my learning experiences to design and teach a senior accounting capstone course. A capstone course usually integrates and synthesizes all previous major courses in an academic discipline, and facilitates transition to a chosen career (Henscheid 2000). The importance of an accounting capstone derives from new initiatives in undergraduate education and from recent changes in accounting education. I address implementation issues with respect to course content, instructional methods, assignment of faculty, class size, and assessment. Finally, I describe course requirements and specific assignments from my accounting capstone course. Appendices include my course syllabus, a comprehensive list of topics and readings and a list of institutions with accounting capstone courses.
