CPE Session 19: Sunday, August 3, 8:00 AM
– 12:00 PM
Financial Electronic Commerce
Description/Objectives:
Integrating e-commerce/business in the accounting
curriculum has been a challenge. Neither the
pervasive effects of e-commerce on internal
and external accounting processes are clearly
articulated nor a conceptual approach for handling
these changes has been formulated. This workshop
illustrates an approach that focuses on chronicling
and analyzing e-commerce developments in the
context of accounting cycles. For example, few
changes in the revenue cycle are as follows:
online real-time nature of sales orders coming
through B2B or B2C storefronts, online credit
approvals, electronic bill presentment and payment,
electronic lockboxes, e-cash, and online management
of receivables. Some examples in financial reporting
area are: web-enabled virtual close, web-based
executive dashboards, and enterprise information
portals. This workshop will cover major changes
in accounting workflows in revenue, expenditure,
conversion, and financial reporting cycles.
We will discuss integration of these developments
in accounting, particularly accounting information
systems or as a stand-alone course, student
assignments, and materials available for implementing
this approach, among other things. Additionally,
if time permits, we will look at the web-related
capabilities of accounting software, effects
of XML/XBRL, and a conceptual approach to internal
controls in the e-commerce environment.
Format/Structure:
Primarily a lecture/discussion format.
Intended Audience:
