Methodology for Case Writing and Case Teaching
Description/Objectives:
Objectives:
Provide a structure on how to develop a case;
Present instructions on field work, organizing
the case, writing the case and writing the teaching
note; and
Provide methodology for teaching cases including
board plans.
The content of the workshop
deals with issues the writer faces when wanting
to write a case for classroom use or for publication.
The steps related to case writing will be explained.
The content of both the case and the teaching
note will be presented. Case writing is something
that can be accomplished by even the most unseasoned
writer. The case method of teaching is a fertile
way to engage students in the decision processes
of others. It is also a way to teach without
using lectures and allowing the students to
discover truths through carefully mining information.
The methods discussed in this workshop will
be in the area of field-researched cases. Teaching
cases can be intimidating to those who have
never engaged in that method and it is helpful
to know there are some successful methods that
have been developed by seasoned case teachers.
To meet the objectives, the
participants will have information related to
a case, see how the case was written from the
information and how to develop the teaching
note based on the case learning objectives.
Examples and step-by-step instructions for case
writing, development of teaching notes, and
case teaching will be presented.
Format/Structure:
The workshop will consists of PowerPoint slides,
which will be emailed to all participants who
want a copy of them; the questions you need
to ask as you begin to develop a case study;
the step-by-step method used to write a case
and teaching note. Various methods that successful
case writers and teachers have used when applying
this method of learning will be presented. Illustrative
case materials will be given as well as a case
written from those materials. Board plans, control
of class time, control of discussion, and other
issues related to case teaching will be given.
Intended Audience:
The intended audience is anyone who has an interested
in writing cases and teaching using the case
method. This method has been used for years
at Harvard and the Ivey School.
