The Use of Cases in Teaching Financial
Accounting and Financial Statement Analysis

Description/Objectives:
The workshop will address the benefit—to both students and instructors—of the use of cases in teaching Financial and Intermediate Accounting and Financial Statement Analysis. A diskette including an elaborate six-part student handout that includes ratios, predictive models, and disclosure adequacy scores will be distributed to each participant and discussed in the workshop.

Format/Structure:

Annual reports of real companies, including Enron, WorldCom, and United Airlines, will be used to illustrate the use of cases:

  1. As a supplement to teaching financial and intermediate accounting, and
  2. As a primary method of teaching financial statement analysis.

Also, each participant will receive a diskette containing an elaborate student handout that can be adapted by the participant to his or her own style of teaching.

Intended Audience:
Instructors who are now using, plan to use, or want to know more about using, full-text annual reports of real companies (including Enron, WorldCom, and United Airlines) in teaching Introductory and Intermediate Accounting and Financial Statement Analysis.

Presenter:
Mostafa M. Maksy, Northeastern Illinois University
