CPE Session 36: Sunday, August 3, 1:00 – 4:00 PM

Advancing Curricular Change in Technology: Effective and Cost Efficient Means to Introduce ERP Concepts

Description/Objectives:
Stand-alone, interactive CDs have been developed by accounting faculty, as course supplements, that introduce ERP concepts and show how technology can be leveraged to enhance data-driven strategic decision-making in UG accounting contexts. Support was provided by SAP. To date, 2 or 6 planned CDs (for 6 accounting courses) have been developed, that can be used individually or in combination. The first 2 CDs target introductory sophomore financial and managerial accounting, and require 1 hour per week or less of independent student study time. There are no hardware requirements, software requirements, or on-line requirements…other than a PC. Complete faculty training is achieved via this 3-hour course. These educational products mimic real SAP systems without data entry tedium or advanced systems complexity. Focus is on data driven decision-making, drill down capacities, "virtual close" timeliness, executive "dashboard" features and presentation graphics.

Format/Structure:
The format of the session is as follows: (a) a brief introduction to the product from the podium, followed by (b) demonstrated step-by-step exercises providing participants hands on opportunities. Session concludes with lessons learned from faculty using the products in class.

Intended Audience:
Faculty teaching sophomore level introductory financial and managerial accounting or administrators looking for a means to incorporate technology in their programs, but seeking a strategic decision oriented approach (and not a data entry vocational orientation.)

Presenters:
Philip Reckers, Arizona State University
Govind Iyer, Arizona State University
Bart Hartman, Saint Joseph's University
Robert Rosacker, University of South Dakota
Brian Reckers, KPMG
