Description:
Participants at this poster session will learn techniques to provide feedback to students to improve the quality of classroom participation. Instructors of case classes and other discussion classes are perennially challenged to find ways to persuade students to be regular participants. Introverted students can be very talented, but lack the confidence to speak up. If the instructor selectively comments to the introvert in the public classroom setting, this can cause the student to withdraw further or may create the impression of favoritism in the class. Extroverted students may dominate class discussions or get off track too frequently. The instructor may be reticent to criticize a student publicly because of the dampening impact this could have on others, but the student needs the feedback to improve performance. This session will exhibit how features found in common online systems, Angel, or Web CT, may be used to improve students' participation in discussions. The session will include examples of the detailed feedback provided, student performance patterns, and student survey results regarding the usefulness of the feedback. Moreover, this session will show how to strive towards the communication elements identified in the AICPA's Core Competency Framework for Entry into the Accounting Profession's personal competencies.
