2004 Annual Meeting

Poster Session 11:
Delivering Online Accounting Education
in an Innovative Graduate Program

Presenters:
Roberta J. Cable, Pace University
Patricia Healy, Pace University

Description:
The e.MBA@PACE is a collaborative learning approach to distance education on the M.B.A. level. There are no discipline-based courses. Instead, students achieve learning objectives by focusing on complex, contemporary business issues that require cross-disciplinary approaches for a solution. Collaborative learning is emphasized, and as a result, a variety of managerial skills, such as team building, are developed. Students complete nine large-scale interdisciplinary projects and a series of individual learning modules. They work asynchronously in virtual teams while completing projects for a team solution. They use Blackboard as their software platform to communicate with each other and with faculty.

I have taught in the e.MBA@PACE for the past two years and specialize in accounting. As a faculty member, I have taken on several different roles: project director, team facilitator and discipline-learning specialist. I would like to share my experiences with the teaching activities that support accounting education in this truly innovative program. Also, I specifically would like to discuss the teaching videos I made using RealPlayer Plus and the graded Discussion Forums I posted to Blackboard. The videos delivered accounting content needed to achieve a module's learning objectives. The graded discussion forums were designed to stimulate critical-thinking skills.
