2004 Annual Meeting

Poster Session 23:
Are You Ready to Play
Who Wants to Be an Accountant?

Presenter:
Michelle McEacharn, University of Louisiana at Monroe

Description: This session will illustrate a computer-based learning tool (WWTB) based on the Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? television show. WWTB relies on a database of questions that the instructor can customize to the material in any course and the manner of game play is limited only by instructor imagination. The game incorporates lifelines (Ask the Audience, Ask Your Team, and 50/50) that are similar to the television show but flexible in terms of use. The game automatically tracks game time and keeps score for each student or team.

Evidence from use of the game in an auditing course over a two-year time frame indicated improvement in individual exam scores and overall course performance. Senior exit exam scores were higher for students who had been a part of the course in which the game was played, indicating positive long-term retention benefits. Additionally, the game can be used to develop the interpersonal and/or strategy-development skills of students.

The game and database structure are available to instructors on a complimentary basis through the author’s website. Instructions for downloading, installing, and playing the game will be made available to interested individuals at the poster session.
