2004 Annual Meeting

Poster Session 28:
Duty Hours Audit: Taking Time to Count

Presenters:
Cathleen L. Miller, University of Michigan—Flint
Pamela J. Royston, Genesys Regional Medical Center

Description:
The purpose of our session is to share a successful service learning opportunity introduced into an introductory audit class. Genesys and the University of Michigan—Flint School of Management (SOM) auditing students partnered together to perform a compliance audit to assess whether residents/interns were in compliance with a newly issued duty hour requirement for residency-training programs and make recommendations for monitoring hours. The new requirement was issued by the accrediting organizations (ACGME and AOA) for residency training. The audit allowed the students to put into practice the auditing theory they were learning, while helping Genesys document its compliance with the duty-hour requirement. We hope to show how partnering with the community benefits both the students and the organization. Our goal is to encourage other educators to look for and try service learning opportunities in their areas of teaching.
