2004 Annual Meeting

Poster Session 1:
Teaching Financial Accounting with Analogies

Presenter:
Fred Phillips, University of Saskatchewan

Description:
This session will provide a forum for sharing ideas about using analogies to teach basic financial accounting topics. Posters will define the concept of analogy as a teaching tool and will summarize research outlining characteristics of effective analogy use. A compiled list of useful analogies will be presented, and attendees will be invited to share their own analogies with others at the session. For participants interested in the underlying research, empirical evidence will be presented showing how simple and elaborate analogies influence student learning, as compared to no-analogy learning conditions.

Learning outcomes for participants include:

  • Learn how to create effective analogies for their own classes
  • Learn how to use analogies effectively in their classroom
  • Obtain a list of ready-to-use analogies for financial accounting topics
  • Share and discuss ideas about their own favorite analogies
  • Be exposed to research on the effects of analogies in teaching
