Description:
The Division of Accounting within Nanyang Business School recently introduced a new required course, Business Valuation and Analysis, for Accountancy undergraduates. Unlike traditional courses on business valuation and analysis, this course grounds students in the theory of capital markets and the firm such that students can better appreciate the use of accounting information in capital market and firm circumstance. The course provides students with the conceptual background and analytical skills that are necessary to identify, assess, and apply information for purposes of analyzing and valuing business activities and entities. Emphasis is placed on integrating the use of financial and nonfinancial information in valuation and analysis. Special attention is paid to the role that corporate governance mechanisms play in the analysis of risk and valuation of companies. The course is conducted in seminar style, using cases and newspaper reports that provide the platform for discussion and analysis enabling students to develop critical-thinking, analytical, and communication skills. Students also participate in a business valuation project in which they create a simple investment portfolio using hypothetical dollars.

Besides providing a description of the course content and pedagogy, we will share our ideas, experiences, and the thinking underlying the course.
