Poster Session 10:
Invent-a-Scene: A Precertification
Skills Development Approach
in Multiple Course Settings

Presenter:
Donald E. Wygal, Rider University
Margaret O'Reilly-Allen, Rider University
M. Elizabeth Haywood, Rider University

Description:
The Computer-Based-Test (CBT) delivery of the CPA Exam employs Case-Based Simulations designed to assess a candidate's knowledge and skills through problem scenarios typically faced on the job. Candidates must demonstrate software skills in navigating tab-style screens to access appropriate online resources to address the identified problem scenario. According to the AICPA, this approach will more closely reflect the practice environment (than did the paper-and-pencil version of the exam) and will enable assessment of multiple skill sets, including research, software, analytical, and written communications.

Thus, it will be very advantageous for candidates to have experienced similar tasks during their precertification coursework. Invent-a-Scene draws upon student experiences with using ancillary textbook materials and requires them to “invent” a scenario to reflect workplace tasks. Students are responsible for identifying relevant technical issues of the scenario and for specifying appropriate software and search requirements to complete the assignment. Peer review of scenarios is a part of the assignment, as is the active input of members of the professional community.

Author experiences and feedback from students and accounting professionals enable informed comparisons of results across multiple settings and an assessment of appropriate expectations/staging in alternative courses.
