2004 Annual Meeting

Poster Session 12:
Multimedia Technology:
The Third Revolution in Higher Education

Presenter:
A. James McKee, College of Charleston

Description:
This poster session presents an innovative approach to teaching cost accounting which may apply to other areas of accounting. Multimedia application software was developed to transform cost/managerial lecture notes into several computer-assisted learning modules designed for self-study preparation. The design of each module was based on several of the fundamental learning principles identified from the multimedia literature. One of the modules simulates a job-order cost system, which embodies several basic computer-based features commonly found in commercial software. It includes eleven PC terminals, supporting animation, and complete transaction/master file linkage. The "control center" (home page) is comprised of the five inventory-related accounts (raw material, work-in-process, finished goods, Moh expense, and Moh applied), three liability accounts (vendors payable, wages payable, and accounts payable) as well as a summary income statement.

Also, several modules are electronic problem-solving machines that generate a 100% incrementally unfolding solution. Kicker? The user is required to navigate toward the solution by deciding which machine "cluster" of raw data is sufficient to derive new data and transmit it to other logically linked components.

Other modules include: ABC, C-V-P analysis, process costing, TVM, capital budgeting, master budgeting.
