Presenter:
Susan H. Ivancevich, The University of North Carolina at Wilmington
Description:
This session will focus on the pros and cons of teaching accounting courses online. The presentation materials are based on three courses taught online by the presenter during the Spring 2004 semester. These courses included one undergraduate course (Governmental/Not-for-Profit Accounting) and two graduate-level courses (Governmental/Not-for-Profit Accounting and Ethics and Professionalism in Accounting). All courses were taught using the Web-CT platform.
Participants will learn about course development and administration in an online environment. At the session, participants will be able to view all online course materials on a laptop and will learn about the functionality and use of various WebCT features such as homepage, syllabus, schedule, calendar, course content, assignments, discussion forum, chat, my grades, and email. Participants will also learn about the uses of various course management tools, such as online assignment submission, online grading, and managing and tracking student activity. Advantages and pitfalls of using cases, group work, and testing in an online environment will also be discussed. Emphasis will also be placed on how to leverage the benefits of web platforms to enhance traditional courses that are not taught entirely online (a.k.a. "web-enhanced classes").
