Description:
This case has two parts that have shown to be effective learning strategies in my AIS course: a scavenger hunt and a section where students "prove it to themselves," described as follows:
Best Travel is a database case that includes a scavenger hunt to create the data model and shows students that they can make accounting entries and develop financial statements by entering information only once into the database. The case starts with data modeling. In most data modeling assignments students are given narratives that are translated into data models and then implemented into a database program. The Best Travel case starts with the database supplied to students. They need to extract the data model including the cardinalities. This requires knowledge of how to build and implement a data model, but uses their skills in reverse like a scavenger hunt. Next, the students are required to make entries in the database to show them that they are only stored in one place. In the final part of the project, students are required to extract all financial statement numbers for the income statement and balance sheet using queries and transfer them to reports in the reporting function using Microsoft® Access.
