2004 Annual Meeting

CPE SESSION 5: SUNDAY, AUGUST 8, 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM

Tips & Techniques for the New AIS Instructor

Description/Objectives:
Teaching introductory Accounting Information Systems can be challenging, especially to faculty who are teaching this course for the first time. In this CPE class we discuss many of the approaches faculty use in designing this course and help you identify which approach might be best for your program. We emphasize content areas that have proven problematic to instructors in the past such as data modeling, internal controls, business processes, computerized controls, grading, and managing course expectations and offer suggestions about teaching techniques, assignments, and projects designed to address these problem areas. Current AIS texts are discussed as well as other available resources for AIS instructors.

Format/Structure:
This course utilizes primarily a lecture format with small group and large group discussions. The small class size is designed to maximize within group interactions.

Intended Audience:
This course is designed for accounting faculty who are unfamiliar with teaching AIS. Experienced faculty members who have not previously taught an AIS course or who do not have a background in AIS might benefit from this class. Similarly, new faculty members who would like help with assignments, projects, and approaches unique to AIS might enjoy this course.
