Practical Tax Planning Strategies with Investments—Workshop for
Tax and/or Financial Planning Educators
Description/Objectives:
This workshop is intended to provide tax and/or personal finance educators with the latest knowledge and techniques for practical tax planning with investments. It will also cover methods for effectively teaching such information in the classroom.
A distinguishing feature of the workshop will be the presentation and discussion of integrated applications of investment research with tax minimization techniques. Coverage of municipal bonds, for example, will include discussion of research of performance of "high-yield" municipal bonds, their correlations with other investments, sector risk, bid-ask spread issues, and alternative investment choices.
The workshop, in addition to covering planning with stocks and bonds, will address planning with real estate, derivatives, and insurance products, including annuities. Also covered will be planning for college funding, retirement planning, estate and gift planning, and charitable transfers.
The workshop’s presenter, Seth Hammer, is author of CCH’s Investments and Taxes: A Practical Guide for Financial Advisors (2004, Second edition). He has been providing financial education classes for members of the NFL’s Baltimore Ravens since 1996.
Format/Structure:
The workshop will be conducted in a seminar format. It is intended, however, that the presentation will be flexible, with greater and more detailed discussion centered on those issues that are of greatest concern to the participants. Discussion and feedback will be welcome and encouraged.
Structurally, the program will be presented in essentially two parts. The first part will encompass planning with specific types of investments (e.g., real estate). The second part will encompass planning to meet specific financial goals (e.g., retirement).
Intended Audience:
The targeted audience is professors of taxation and personal financial planning courses. Accounting professors of nontax courses, however, may find it helpful for enhancing their understanding of taxation of investments and related planning strategies.
Presenter:
Seth Hammer, Towson University
