Teaching Activity-Based Cost Management

Description/Objectives:
This workshop is designed to help faculty successfully incorporate Activity-Based Cost Management (ABCM) in management accounting courses. ABCM is one of the most significant developments in management accounting. A large number of manufacturing and service companies have implemented or are in the process of implementing ABCM. While most management accounting texts have incorporated ABCM, the subject is still relatively new for many faculty.

Each instructor has more than ten years’ experience teaching ABCM at several levels: undergraduate, graduate, and executive. The workshop will include a brief overview of ABCM; methodology, and appropriate content for introductory, intermediate, and advanced (including graduate) management accounting courses. The instructors will share representative exercises, cases, and ABC software/computer models that they have successfully used over the last several years. Objectives of the workshop are to help participants understand ABCM, its importance, select appropriate methodology, and design ABCM course material that would excite their students.

Format/Structure:
Participants will receive a comprehensive handout consisting of course outline, exercises, analysis and discussion cases, cases requiring computer model building, and a short ABCM bibliography. The handout will include slides that participants may, if they like, include directly or adapt for their presentations.

The presenters use a dynamic interactive format that involves lecture, discussion, and, if feasible, hands-on training in the use of ABC computer software, otherwise demo of ABC software. The workshop provides a wealth of ABCM information that participants can readily use in their own courses.

Intended Audience:
The intended audience includes all faculty who teach or plan to teach management accounting at either undergraduate or graduate level.
