2004 Annual Meeting

CPE SESSION 18: SUNDAY, AUGUST 8, 8:00 AM – 12:00 PM

Governmental and Nonprofit Instruction: The Other Stuff

Description/Objectives:
At the 2001 and 2002 Annual Meetings, the Education Workshop was devoted to how to teach GASB Statement No. 34. In Hawaii last year, we moved beyond this standard and discussed how to teach other governmental accounting topics including MFBA, principles, and auditing. This year, we are going to examine teaching the other issues we cover in our Governmental and Nonprofit courses—that’s right, the nonprofit topics. We will have speakers examine the teaching techniques for colleges and universities, hospitals, and all nonprofit organizations—both public sector and private sector. If time allows, we will also have a GASB Update for those who missed the midyear conference. To meet these objectives, section members familiar with the topics will be making presentations exploring what the GASB and other organizations are doing in these areas, and what we need to include in our classroom discussions. While we still have to firm up the speaker schedule, volunteers to date include Rita Cheng, Mary Fischer, Jean Harris, Kathryn Jervis, Susan Koch, and Louis Stewart. There will be plenty of time for questions, so plan ahead and come with things in mind.

Format/Structure:
The workshop will consist of four separate presentations, each one lasting approximately 55 minutes for a total of 220 minutes (240 minutes, less a 20 minute break)(See Schedule):

  • Teaching college and university accounting and reporting issues.
  • Teaching hospital accounting and reporting issues.
  • Teaching nonprofit accounting and reporting issues.
  • Teaching in a graduate nonprofit management program.

It is possible that other sessions will be added later, but this is the current plan. The time allocated to each presentation will depend on the number of speakers. Approximately two-thirds of each time slot will be reserved for the presentation, with the other one-third used for questions and comments.
