CPE SESSION 22: SUNDAY, AUGUST 8, 8:00 AM – 12:00 PM
Designing and Delivering a Case Course
[Cancelled]
Description/Objectives:
The workshop will focus on two things: how to design a case course and how to teach a case. The workshop deals with the design of a case course class (how to do it), how to get students to contribute to a case discussion, grading in case courses, how to identify a good case, how to grow as a case teacher, and, if time permits, how to write good cases. The design of a case course has proven to be problematic for many who first start teaching in this format. Guidelines and an illustration of an actual case course design will be given. To illustrate teaching a case course, participants will be given a case to read and discuss (participants take the role of the student). This is used to illustrate how to involve students and keep them engaged in discussion by asking engaging questions that illicit responses based on information from the case. The structure of the workshop will be active participation by those who attend.
Format/Structure:
A case will be furnished that participants will read and discuss (participants take the role of the student). The design of a case course class (how to do it), how to get students to contribute to a case discussion, how to identify a good case, how to grow as a case teacher, and, if time permits, how to write good cases will all be illustrated and discussed. The structure of the workshop will be active participation by those who attend using an actual case to do training in case leadership discussion. Each participant will read the case and then be called on to participate. How to design a case course will be illustrated by using a course design format that has proved to be very successful to institute an entire case based curriculum in a graduate program.
Intended Audience:
All who wish to be a part of the engaging and exciting way of teaching that is practical and well received and embraced by students.
