Active Learning and Critical Thinking

Description/Objectives:
Participants will identify important disciplinary thinking skills that students should possess and devise active learning teaching strategies to help students extend their abilities within the context of a specific classroom assignment. The presenter has worked extensively with individuals from across the country and from all disciplines. He is one of fifty faculty honored nationwide by the American Association of Higher Education and the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching for his “outstanding educational leadership” and has co-authored the widely used Active Learning: Creating Excitement in the Classroom and Using Active learning in College Classes: A Range of Options for Faculty.

Format/Structure:
The workshop will explore:

  • How course structure can promote critical thinking
  • How questioning skills promote critical thinking
  • Thinking skills central to the field of accounting
  • How to assess critical-thinking skills
  • Varied definitions of critical thinking

Intended Audience:
This workshop is intended for faculty interested in developing tools for building accounting students’ critical-thinking skills.
