Session 2
Student-Created Classroom Newsletters as Learning Portfolios

Presenter:
Wendy Tietz, Kent State University

Description:
In introductory accounting classes, teams of students can create classroom newsletters as a type of learning portfolio. These newsletters cover all activities of the semester and are due the last week of class. Sections of the newsletter include student biographies, class speaker reviews, student presentation reviews, applicability of class material to future career choices, and an advice column to students starting this course the following semester, with specific objectives for each draft. The final newsletter is a comprehensive review of the course and functions as a learning portfolio; it enables the students to review and reflect over the semester, giving them another opportunity to put all of the pieces from the course together in their minds. Participants will see examples of these newsletters and learn about the benefits of a learning portfolio in the student’s learning process. Participants will also get ideas for how to implement this newsletter assignment and the types of sections that can be contained within the newsletters.
