Session 9
Auditing for Social Responsibility

Presenter:
Linda Kuechler, Daemen College

Description:
This session will present an innovative way to teach undergraduate auditing. It will show how a two-course learning community can be developed that combines the traditional undergraduate financial auditing class with an active learning class on social auditing. The auditing techniques from the financial auditing class will be put into action when the students perform a social audit of the College, itself. Such things as engagement letters, auditing methods, and opinions will be carried over to the linked social auditing class. Oral and written communication skills of the students are reinforced and refined, and professional behavior is practiced.

The participants will:

  1. Learn various definitions of learning communities.
  2. Discover how to link courses in a learning community.
  3. Understand the integration of project management concepts into courses.
  4. Realize how service learning (or civic responsibility) concepts can be integrated into traditional accounting courses.
  5. Use active learning techniques to motivate and reinforce learning.
  6. Gain knowledge of different methods that can be used to reinforce oral and written communication skills and professional behavior.
