Session 12
Using a Blog in Teaching Intermediate Financial Accounting

Presenter:
Don Pagach, North Carolina State University

Description:
The session will focus on my experience using a weblog, or more commonly a "blog," as part of my teaching intermediate financial accounting. The weblog (accountingndp.blogspot.com) was created to highlight current financial accounting events that could be used in class discussion. The weblog evolved into getting students to write their own thoughts about the events and discussing the postings in group sessions and during class.

The key issues addressed in the session will be the mechanics of creating a weblog. There are a number of companies that provide free weblog hosting and the details of posting entries and allowing comments are quite simple. The session will also discuss what types of current event entries have created the best discussions and comments. The session will also focus on the types of assignments that can be used with the weblog and ways to encourage students to participate in the weblog experience.
