Session 15
Intermediate Accounting Students’ Introduction to the Web
Presenter:
Christie W. Johnson, Montana State University–Bozeman
Description:
Students are masters of the internet, but they might not know how to find accounting relevant information! As students begin intermediate accounting, they benefit from a guided internet tour exercise, designed to introduce them to websites that could be useful throughout their careers. Along with some obvious websites, this assignment could include career exploration, student/professional memberships, academic information, scholarships, electronic library resources, and online textbook materials.
This assignment includes a Word template with instructions, hot links, and brief questions about information found on each website. Students open the document, click on the links, enter their answers, and send the completed file electronically to the professor. Logical websites might include: FASB, AICPA, AAA, AAA Student Superlinks (which has links to many other useful sites), Uniform CPA Exam, PCAOB, SEC, IRS, IMA, FEI, and IASB.
To achieve other specific objectives, other links/questions could include:
- Campus career placement center and employers
- AICPA and other professional organizations with student memberships, Beta Alpha Psi (national and local)
- Department curriculum and advising, message center, news events, scholarships
- Library off-campus access proxy, e-journals and databases, catalog
- Textbook online resources
- Google (refining a broad search on something specific)
