Session 10
Teaching Using Online and Internet Resources: Accessing or Creating the Needed Resources
Presenters:
Pearl Rozenberg, University of Sydney
Phillip Lee, University of Sydney
Robert Gray, University of Sydney
Graeme Dean, University of Sydney
Description:
Teaching effectively now makes use of online resources. The benefits, both from the student and teaching perspective, are premised on the fact that materials are available. How can you ensure the necessary materials are available so that effective teaching and learning can proceed?
Different approaches have been taken to creating or accessing the needed online databases. Within University of Sydney, academics have accessed the free databases or have accessed the commercial databases. Others have worked within the copyright regime and university copyright agreements and built online resources for use in teaching. Yet another approach in use is a private agreement with publishers to gain access to materials.
Each method has its unique set of problems as well as benefits. The session will look at the promise among the perils. This session will outline the methods used to create or access materials for online use by students at University of Sydney as well as to assess the ease and the problems raised by each method. Presenters will discuss what has been done and its success, as well as make comparisons with methods being used elsewhere.
