Session 18
A Vignette of Games for the Accounting Classroom

This Session has been CANCELED

Presenters:
Renee L. Forbes, Johnson C. Smith University
Garistine Davis, Fayetteville State University

Description:
There's a crisis in accounting education in the United States. After hearing warnings for years, educators are aware that the environment must change in order to be relevant and valuable and to continue to attract students to the profession (Heffes 2001).

Accounting educators traditionally lecture and solve problems on the board, with students as the passive recipients of professors' knowledge, but research demonstrates learning is greatly enhanced when students are active participants in the learning process (Doyle 1993). The need to change in our educational delivery system is under constant debate. Few would argue against the need to move away from the traditional "chalk and talk" classroom delivery (D. Boyd, S. Boyd, and W. Boyd 2001).

The following is a list of recommendations to assists faculty in moving away from the "chalk and talk" classroom delivery:

  • Case Presentations and Discussions
  • Role Plays
  • Games and Debates

The participants will be introduced to a collection of games that can be used as a viable alternative to lecturing in the accounting classroom.
