Session 19
Embedding Service Learning Projects into Intermediate Accounting, Auditing, and Accounting Information Systems

Presenters:
Shifei Chung, Rowan University
Ramesh Narasimhan, Montclair State University

Description:
While the concepts of service learning in accounting have been introduced in various ways, the only consistent application of this has been in the VITA program. Due to the fact that the experiential element required in service learning courses requires extensive efforts in identifying suitable businesses not too far from the university campus, accounting courses using these concepts soon discontinue them. We offer a way in which these concepts can be used consistently in courses by utilizing organizations, clubs, and divisions within the university for the service learning projects. As some of the organizations, clubs, and divisions on campus have frequent turnover in their leadership due to the graduation of students, they are typically in constant need of accounting and managerial help that can be utilized in accounting courses for the service learning element. We will share a plan that can be used by attendees in their Intermediate Accounting, Auditing, and Accounting Information Systems courses.
