Presenter:
Wadiah Atiyah, American University of Sharjah
Description:
In this session we will explore how learning management systems coupled with wireless infrastructure and student laptops in the classroom can be effectively utilized to increase student motivation and reinforce learning outcomes that enhance the students’ overall classroom experience. The first part will focus on challenges faculty teaching fundamental business courses may face with regard to student motivation and preparedness. We examine faculty perceptions of students with differing abilities, motivation, and educational backgrounds and talk about how wireless and laptop technologies can be adapted as classroom equalizers. The second part of the session will look at how the School of Business and Management at AUS is experimenting with wireless network and laptop technologies to provide students with weekly quizzes that measure and assess their progress and learning outcomes.
Attendees will learn how to effectively utilize a three-part approach of learning management systems, wireless network infrastructure, and laptop technologies to enhance teaching and learning in the introductory financial accounting courses. Effectiveness of this approach is evidenced by higher test scores.
Discuss the technological and infrastructure challenges involved with introducing wireless and laptop-based testing mechanisms into the introductory courses.
Examine faculty and student issues relating to effective adaptation of these technologies.
