Session 7
Exploring the Implications of Wireless Technologies on Accounting Education
Presenter:
Andrew Lymer, University of Birmingham
Description:
The Birmingham Business School is a Hewlett Packard Philanthropy Award recipient. This award provided us with a range of mobile computing equipment for a project in exploring the impact of such environments on collaborative learning with our students. This equipment included iPAQs and two different types of laptop computers (ultra light computers and larger, more regular laptops that were heavier in weight and specification). The machines were loaned to a range of students undertaking intermediate level accounting courses for up to a one-year period. The students were required to complete pre- and post-experiment interviews, complete a number of questionnaires on their experiences during the period of the experiment, and complete a diary on a day-by-day basis detailing their daily use of these facilities.
The results of this project reveal an interesting story as to how these students climbed the learning curve of the use of this technology, both at the university and at home. The results of this study provide insights into the impact of this next generation of technologies on the learning needs and expectations of the next generation of our students.
