Session 9
Service Learning and Fraud Prevention

Presenter:
Martha S. Doran, San Diego State University

Description:
Key Issues and Concepts: I designed a service learning project, as part of my Fraud Examination course, to help students to grow in their skills at providing information and advice to the business community. Student teams have designed fraud awareness presentations for a variety of business classes, working to decide how they can most effectively disseminate this knowledge (fraud awareness) to the target audience. Students gathered initial information from the audience and used this pre-survey information to design their presentations (week of April 25th). Students will collect post-survey information from the audience and use this to evaluate their efforts. Final reports (due May 16th) will include data collected from the various classes and my students' reflections and analysis of their findings.

Learning Outcomes: Participants in my session will learn how to incorporate service learning into a college Fraud Examination course. Results of the fraud awareness pre- and post-assessment from both undergraduate and graduate courses, and from both accounting and nonaccounting majors will be discussed and made available to participants. I will also share my course syllabus, design criteria for this project, and the results of student letters written about their personal awareness of fraud and their role in serving the public interest at the beginning and the end of the course.
