Session 10
E-Portfolios in Support of Deep Learning through Timely Feedback and Reflection

Presenters:
Graeme William Dean, The University of Sydney
Cameron Esslemont

Description:
Cognizant of students' appreciation of timely feedback and of benefits of integrating reflection as a means to encourage personal review and analysis to support individual learning, a team from the Faculty of Economics and Business at Sydney University have implemented a Learning Quality Management Infrastructure that uses e-portfolios to support students' development of deep learning strategies. These portfolios are integrated throughout many assessment tasks.

The session entails several aspects of this pilot: (1) review results of the iterative implementation over the past 24 months with emphasis on the process for constructive alignment of assessments to graduate attributes; (2) examine the issue of using rigid assessment reviews tied to Biggs SOLO Taxonomy; (3) describe student engagement and participation in the dynamics; (4) outline the final balanced student-teacher-centric model; (5) demonstrate opportunities to integrate professional literature under enhanced copyright models; and (6) provide an overview of the technology used.

After the session, participants should have an understanding of the interwoven nature of the major issues in designing, implementing and managing the project with particular understanding of different stakeholders “hallowed turf.” They will also understand from a student’s/teacher’s perspective how systems that support enhanced assessment management are beneficial to scholarship.
