Session 11
Partnering with the Profession – A Continuous Learning Model
Presenter:
Irene Wiecek, University of Toronto at Mississauga
Description:
Public Accounting education involves three stages:
- University/college education;
- Professional accounting school and examinations); and
- An articling period with public accountancy firms.
In this regard, it is a continuum. The university/college education is but a small part of the learning process that spans several years. Significant synergistic opportunities may be achieved if the learning process is seen as a continuous one rather than each stage treating the education as a self–contained, isolated process.
In 2004, the University of Toronto created a partnership with the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ontario (ICAO) through the establishment of the ICAO/Rotman Centre for Innovation in Accounting Education (the Centre).
In this session, participants will learn:
- About the process leading up to the creation of a partnership
- How our university accounting programs were accredited by the ICAO
- The impact of the accreditation
- The tangible benefits of partnering to:
- The university
- The students
- The accounting profession
