Session 11
Partnering with the Profession – A Continuous Learning Model

Presenter:
Irene Wiecek, University of Toronto at Mississauga

Description:
Public Accounting education involves three stages:

  1. University/college education;
  2. Professional accounting school and examinations); and
  3. An articling period with public accountancy firms.

In this regard, it is a continuum. The university/college education is but a small part of the learning process that spans several years. Significant synergistic opportunities may be achieved if the learning process is seen as a continuous one rather than each stage treating the education as a self–contained, isolated process.

In 2004, the University of Toronto created a partnership with the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ontario (ICAO) through the establishment of the ICAO/Rotman Centre for Innovation in Accounting Education (the Centre).

In this session, participants will learn:

  • About the process leading up to the creation of a partnership
  • How our university accounting programs were accredited by the ICAO
  • The impact of the accreditation
  • The tangible benefits of partnering to:
    • The university
    • The students
    • The accounting profession
