Session 24
Hooking Your Executive Audience
Presenters:
Esperanza Huerta, Instituto Tecnologico Autonomo de Mexico
Francisco Villanueva, Instituto Tecnologico Autonomo de Mexico
Description:
Stimulating students' interest in accounting is always important. However, stimulation is critical when your students are executives. Executives need to know right away that they will learn something relevant. An effective way to show the relevance and to stimulate interest in a subject is to start your lecture with a "hook."
A hook can be an exercise, a demonstration, or a small case that highlights the key issues of a topic. However, for executive audiences, a hook should be a small newspaper or magazine article presenting a real-life situation. Showing a real-life situation has greater effect than showing what could happen in a hypothetical situation.
Participants will learn:
- To manage hooks (where to find them and how to keep track of them)
- To present a hook (when to give students the material, what delivering media to use, and how long should it take to present hook)
- To distinguish between teaching cases and hooks (differentiating the objectives and the teaching methodologies)
In addition, the session will provide a database of proven hooks in different topics.
